Worked practice questions

A 120 m train at 54 km/h overtakes a 180 m train moving the same way in 60 s. Slower train’s speed?

  1. 36 km/h
  2. 30 km/h
  3. 40 km/h
  4. 45 km/h
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 36 km/h

Relative speed is (120 + 180)/60 = 5 m/s; the slower train runs at 15 − 5 = 10 m/s = 36 km/h.

A boat’s still-water speed is 12 km/h. It covers 30 km downstream and 18 km upstream in 4 h. Find the positive stream speed.

  1. 3 km/h
  2. 2 km/h
  3. 1 km/h
  4. 4 km/h
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 3 km/h

For stream speed x, 30/(12+x) + 18/(12−x) = 4 reduces to x(x−3)=0; the positive solution is 3 km/h.
