Worked practice questions

The empirical rule 'like dissolves like' predicts that:

  1. Solubility depends only on temperature
  2. Polar solutes dissolve well in polar solvents
  3. All solids dissolve in all liquids
  4. Polar solutes dissolve well in non-polar solvents
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Polar solutes dissolve well in polar solvents

'Like dissolves like' — substances with similar intermolecular forces dissolve in each other. Polar in polar (NaCl in water), non-polar in non-polar (cholesterol in benzene). Mismatched polarities give low solubility.
