Worked practice questions

A circle has a radius of 42.5 centimeters. Using pi as approximately 3.14, what is its area?

  1. 266.9 sq cm
  2. 1,806.25 sq cm
  3. 5,761.625 sq cm
  4. 5,671.625 sq cm
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. 5,671.625 sq cm

1. The formula for area is pi times the radius squared. 2. Square the radius first: 42.5 x 42.5 = 1,806.25. 3. Multiply by pi: 3.14 x 1,806.25. 4. This gives 5,671.625. 5. So the area is approximately 5,671.625 square centimeters. 6. 266.9 sq cm is actually the circumference of this same circle, not its area, and 1,806.25 sq cm forgets to multiply by pi at all. _Source: OpenStax Prealgebra (CC BY 4.0), Ch 5 "Decimals", section 5.3 Decimals and Fractions_
