Worked practice questions

**Transpiration** is the loss of water from the plant in the form of:

  1. Liquid (through hydathodes)
  2. Vapour, mainly through stomata, cuticle and lenticels
  3. Both A and B equally
  4. Only through roots
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Vapour, mainly through stomata, cuticle and lenticels

Transpiration = evaporative water loss (vapour). 90–93% via stomata; 8–10% via cuticle; 0.1–1% via lenticels. Loss as liquid through hydathodes is called guttation (a separate process).

**Stomatal transpiration** accounts for what fraction of total transpiration?

  1. ~10%
  2. ~50%
  3. ~90% (and occurs only during daytime when stomata open)
  4. ~99%
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. ~90% (and occurs only during daytime when stomata open)

Stomatal transpiration = 90–93% of total transpiration, occurring only during the day (most plants). Desert CAM plants are an exception — stomata open at night.
