Worked practice questions

**Packing efficiency** of fcc (and hcp) close-packed structures is:

  1. 52.4%
  2. 68.0%
  3. 74.0%
  4. 100%
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 74.0%

Close-packed structures (fcc, hcp): 74% packing efficiency — highest possible for identical spheres. bcc = 68%, simple cubic = 52.4%.

Packing efficiency of a simple cubic (sc) structure is:

  1. 52.4%
  2. 68%
  3. 74%
  4. 100%
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 52.4%

Sc has 1 sphere per unit cell of edge $a = 2r$. Volume of sphere = $(4/3)\pi r^3$; volume of cube = $a^3 = 8r^3$. Packing efficiency = $((4/3)\pi r^3)/8r^3 = \pi/6 \approx 52.4\%$. Least efficient — Po is the only element with sc structure.
