Worked practice questions

Identify the reaction that is exothermic:

  1. CaO + H$_2$O $\longrightarrow$ Ca(OH)$_2$ + heat
  2. 2KClO$_3$(s) $\longrightarrow$ 2KCl(s) + 3O$_2\uparrow$
  3. CaCO$_3$(s) $\longrightarrow$ CaO(s) + CO$_2\uparrow$
  4. CaCO$_3$ + heat $\longrightarrow$ CaO + CO$_2$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. CaO + H$_2$O $\longrightarrow$ Ca(OH)$_2$ + heat

1. An exothermic reaction shows heat released on the product side. 2. In CaO + H$_2$O $\longrightarrow$ Ca(OH)$_2$ + heat, 'heat' appears with the products, so heat is given out, making it exothermic. 3. The two decompositions (KClO$_3$ and CaCO$_3$ giving CaO + CO$_2$) require heating, i.e. heat taken in, hence endothermic. 4. The reaction written with 'heat' as a reactant absorbs heat and is also endothermic. _Source: Balbharati (Maharashtra Board) Class 10 Science & Technology, Ch 3 "Chemical Reactions and Equations", p.55_

In the reaction 2Ag$_2$O $\longrightarrow$ 4Ag + O$_2\uparrow$, the silver in Ag$_2$O is:

  1. reduced, as it gains electrons from oxygen
  2. oxidised, as it loses hydrogen
  3. oxidised, as it gains oxygen
  4. reduced, as it loses oxygen
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. reduced, as it loses oxygen

1. Silver oxide Ag$_2$O breaks down, and the oxygen leaves as O$_2$ gas. 2. The silver loses its oxygen to become free Ag metal. 3. Loss of oxygen is reduction, so the silver is reduced in this decomposition. 4. The 'oxidised' options are the opposite, the hydrogen option is wrong since no hydrogen is present, and the electron-gain wording does not fit this oxygen-loss case. _Source: Balbharati (Maharashtra Board) Class 10 Science & Technology, Ch 3 "Chemical Reactions and Equations", p.55_

In the reaction 2H$_2$S + SO$_2$ $\longrightarrow$ 3S$\downarrow$ + 2H$_2$O, which reactant acts as the oxidant?

  1. SO$_2$
  2. H$_2$S
  3. H$_2$O
  4. S
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. SO$_2$

1. H$_2$S loses hydrogen (forming H$_2$O and S), so H$_2$S is oxidised and acts as the reductant. 2. The oxidant is the species that causes this oxidation while being reduced itself. 3. SO$_2$ loses oxygen (it becomes S), i.e. it is reduced, so SO$_2$ is the oxidant. 4. S and H$_2$O are products, not the reacting agents, and H$_2$S is the reductant, not the oxidant, so those options are wrong. _Source: Balbharati (Maharashtra Board) Class 10 Science & Technology, Ch 3 "Chemical Reactions and Equations", p.52_
