Worked practice questions

The position vector of the **centroid** of triangle with vertices $A(\vec a),\ B(\vec b),\ C(\vec c)$ is:

  1. $(\vec a + \vec b + \vec c)/3$
  2. $(\vec a + \vec b + \vec c)/2$
  3. $\vec a + \vec b + \vec c$
  4. $(\vec a \cdot \vec b \cdot \vec c)/3$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $(\vec a + \vec b + \vec c)/3$

Centroid $G$ divides each median internally in ratio 2:1, giving $\vec g = (\vec a + \vec b + \vec c)/3$.

If $G(a, 2, -1)$ is the centroid of the triangle with vertices $P(1, 3, 2),\ Q(3, b, -4),\ R(5, 1, c)$, then $(a, b, c)$ equals:

  1. $(3, 2, -1)$
  2. $(3, -2, 1)$
  3. $(2, 3, -1)$
  4. $(3, 2, 1)$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $(3, 2, -1)$

**Centroid formula:** $G = (P + Q + R)/3$. **Coordinates:** $a = (1+3+5)/3 = 3$, $2 = (3+b+1)/3$ ⇒ $b = 2$, $-1 = (2-4+c)/3$ ⇒ $c = -1$. **So $(a, b, c) = (3, 2, -1)$.**
