Worked practice questions

A chiral carbon is one that:

  1. Has only hydrogen atoms attached
  2. Is bonded to four different atoms or groups
  3. Has a double bond
  4. Is in an aromatic ring
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Is bonded to four different atoms or groups

Chiral (asymmetric) carbon = sp³ C bonded to 4 different substituents. Molecule with one chiral C is itself chiral (non-superimposable on its mirror image). **Example:** 2-chlorobutane (C2 is chiral).
