Worked practice questions

**Root pressure** can account for ascent of sap up to approximately:

  1. 1 m
  2. 10–20 m (insufficient for tall trees)
  3. 50–100 m
  4. Unlimited heights
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. 10–20 m (insufficient for tall trees)

Root pressure (~1–2 bars) can push water up about 10–20 m. Inadequate for taller trees (e.g. redwoods, eucalyptus 100+ m). For those, cohesion–tension is the dominant mechanism.
