Worked practice questions

**Swartz reaction** prepares:

  1. Alkyl iodides from alkyl chlorides
  2. Alkyl fluorides from alkyl chlorides/bromides using AgF, Hg₂F₂, AsF₃ or SbF₃
  3. Aryl halides from arenes
  4. Alkyl bromides from alcohols
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Alkyl fluorides from alkyl chlorides/bromides using AgF, Hg₂F₂, AsF₃ or SbF₃

**Swartz:** R-Cl + AgF ⟶ R-F + AgCl. Special inorganic fluorides used because direct F₂ on hydrocarbons is too violent. Useful for making CFCs and other fluorinated compounds.
