Worked practice questions

A salt bridge in a galvanic cell:

  1. Allows ion migration to maintain electrical neutrality of the half-cells
  2. Increases the cell resistance
  3. Carries electrons from cathode to anode
  4. Is the site of oxidation
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Allows ion migration to maintain electrical neutrality of the half-cells

Salt bridge (KCl or KNO₃ in agar) supplies ions to **neutralize charge build-up** in each half-cell as the reaction proceeds — keeps the cell running. Without it, charge separation quickly stops the reaction. It does NOT carry electrons.
