Worked practice questions

When a plant cell is placed in **isotonic** solution:

  1. Cell shrinks (plasmolysis)
  2. Cell swells and bursts
  3. No net movement of water — cell stays unchanged
  4. Water moves into the vacuole only
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. No net movement of water — cell stays unchanged

Isotonic = equal solute concentration inside and outside ⇒ no net water movement, no change in cell shape. (Plant cells, unlike animal cells, don't burst even in hypotonic solution — cell wall prevents lysis.)
