Worked practice questions

In Young's experiment, a BRIGHT fringe (constructive interference) requires path difference = ?

  1. $(n + 0.5)\lambda$, n = 0, 1, 2, …
  2. Always $0$, regardless of n
  3. Half wavelength $\lambda/2$ only
  4. $n\lambda$, n = 0, 1, 2, …
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. $n\lambda$, n = 0, 1, 2, …

Constructive interference (bright) requires path difference = nλ (n = 0, ±1, ±2, ...) so waves arrive in phase. Destructive (dark) needs (n + ½)λ.

In Young's double-slit experiment, the fringe width β is given by:

  1. $\beta = \lambda d / D$
  2. $\beta = D / (\lambda d)$
  3. $\beta = \lambda D / d$
  4. $\beta = \lambda / (D d)$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $\beta = \lambda D / d$

**Young's fringe width:** β = λD/d. λ = wavelength; D = slit-to-screen distance; d = slit separation. Larger λ, larger D, smaller d → wider fringes.

The resolving power (RP) of a diffraction grating with N slits in the m-th order is:

  1. $RP = mN$
  2. $RP = m + N$ (sum)
  3. $RP = m / N$ (ratio)
  4. $RP = m^2 + N^2$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. $RP = mN$

**Diffraction grating:** RP = λ / Δλ = mN (where N = number of slits illuminated, m = diffraction order). Higher orders + more slits = sharper, better-separated spectral lines.
