Worked practice questions

The magnetic force on a charge q moving with velocity v in field B:

  1. qE
  2. qvB sin theta
  3. q²B
  4. qB/v
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. qvB sin theta

F = qv × B. Magnitude F = qvB sin theta where theta is angle between v and B. Direction perpendicular to both v and B.

For a current loop in a non-uniform magnetic field, net force is zero only if:

  1. Field is zero
  2. Field is UNIFORM (constant in space)
  3. Loop is small
  4. Current is small
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. Field is UNIFORM (constant in space)

In uniform B, all parts of the loop experience equal and opposite forces — net force zero (but torque can be nonzero). In non-uniform B, opposite sides of loop see different B, leading to net force (causes a magnetic dipole to be pulled toward higher field regions for an aligned moment).
