Worked practice questions

Which acid generally does NOT give hydrogen gas on reacting with metals (except Mn, Mg)?

  1. hydrochloric acid
  2. sulphuric acid (dilute)
  3. acetic acid
  4. nitric acid (HNO₃)
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. nitric acid (HNO₃)

HNO₃ is a strong oxidiser it oxidises the H₂ produced to water, so metals (except Mn, Mg with very dilute HNO₃) give oxides/nitrogen oxides instead of H₂.

In the reactivity series, which metal would be displaced from its salt solution by all of Fe, Zn and Al?

  1. copper
  2. potassium
  3. magnesium
  4. calcium
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. copper

A metal is displaced by metals above it in the reactivity series. Cu is below Fe, Zn and Al, so all three can displace copper from CuSO₄. Mg, Ca, K are all above them.
