Worked practice questions

A cafe records its daily customer counts for eight days, already ordered: 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 24, 25, 30. What is the median daily count?

  1. 19
  2. 18
  3. 20
  4. 22
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. 19

1. There are n = 8 values, an even count, so the median averages the two middle values. 2. The middle positions are the 4th and 5th values in the ordered list: 18 and 20. 3. Average them: (18 + 20)/2 = 19 customers. 4. So the median daily count is 19 even though 19 never appears in the data. 5. Option B, 18, picks the lower middle value alone instead of averaging the two middle values. _Source: OpenStax Introductory Business Statistics (CC BY 4.0), Ch 2 "Descriptive Statistics", section 2.3 Measures of the Center of the Data_

Seven quiz scores are recorded: 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10. What is the mode of the scores?

  1. Score of 8
  2. Score of 10
  3. Score of 7
  4. Score of 9
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. Score of 9

1. The mode is the value that appears most often in the data. 2. Count the appearances: 7 once, 8 twice, 9 three times, 10 once. 3. The score 9 has the highest frequency, so the mode is 9. 4. Option A, 8, is the runner-up frequency, not the most frequent value. _Source: OpenStax Introductory Business Statistics (CC BY 4.0), Ch 2 "Descriptive Statistics", section 2.3 Measures of the Center of the Data_

In a customer survey, 6 of the 48 respondents rated a store five stars. What is the relative frequency of five-star ratings?

  1. 0.600
  2. 0.250
  3. 0.125
  4. 0.480
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 0.125

1. Relative frequency divides the count for one outcome by the total number of observations. 2. Here the frequency is 6 five-star ratings and the total is 48 respondents. 3. Divide: 6 / 48 = 0.125, or 12.5% of respondents. 4. So the relative frequency of five-star ratings is 0.125. 5. Option A, 0.600, reads the raw count 6 as if it were already a proportion out of 10. _Source: OpenStax Introductory Business Statistics (CC BY 4.0), Ch 2 "Descriptive Statistics", section 2.1 Display Data_
