Worked practice questions

**The team practiced for months; ___ , they won the championship.** Which transition best completes the sentence?

  1. despite this
  2. however
  3. as a result
  4. nevertheless
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. as a result

Months of practice → winning is a cause-and-effect relationship. 'As a result' (or 'consequently', 'therefore') shows this causal connection. Contrast transitions don't fit.

**The novel was widely criticized at publication; ___ , it has since become a beloved classic.** Best transition:

  1. similarly
  2. consequently
  3. for instance
  4. however
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. however

The sentence shows reversal — initial criticism vs. later acclaim. 'However' (or 'nevertheless') signals this contrast. 'Consequently' would mean the criticism caused the acclaim, which doesn't make sense.

**The crops failed due to drought; ___ , farmers received government compensation.** Best transition:

  1. however
  2. furthermore
  3. despite this
  4. subsequently
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. subsequently

Farmer compensation came AFTER the drought-caused crop failure — a time sequence. 'Subsequently' (afterwards, later) captures this temporal relationship. 'However'/'despite this' would suggest contrast (which is partly implied but the temporal sense is the primary one here). 'Furthermore' adds info without time relation.
