Worked practice questions

It takes 8 hours for a 600 km journey: 120 by train, rest by car. 20 min more if 200 by train, rest by car. Train:Car speed ratio:

  1. 2:3
  2. 3:2
  3. 3:4
  4. 4:3
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. 3:4

1. Let train speed t, car speed c. Case 1: 120/t + 480/c = 8. Case 2: 200/t + 400/c = 8 + 1/3 = 25/3. 2. Subtract case 1 from case 2: 80/t − 80/c = 1/3 → 80(c − t)/(tc) = 1/3 → 240(c−t) = tc. 3. Testing ratio 3:4 (t=3k, c=4k): 240(k) = 12k² → k = 20. Speeds 60 and 80 km/h satisfy both cases. Ratio 3:4. _Source: KMAT Karnataka 2023 PYQ Q.46_
