The price of a kilo of jaggery rose from ₹40 to ₹50. What is the percent increase?

  1. $10\%$
  2. $20\%$
  3. $25\%$
  4. $30\%$
Show answer and solution

A shirt's price is increased by 20% and then discounted by 20%. The final price is what fraction of the original?

  1. Same as original
  2. $80\%$ of original
  3. $120\%$ of original
  4. $96\%$ of original
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: D. $96\%$ of original

(1.20)(0.80) = 0.96. Final price is 96% of original (a net 4% decrease). The naive '20 − 20 = 0' is the trap.
