Worked practice questions

In a school of 600 students, 40% play sports. Of those who play sports, 25% play cricket. What percentage of all students play cricket?

  1. $65\%$
  2. $15\%$
  3. $10\%$
  4. $40\%$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. $10\%$

40% of 25% = 0.40 × 0.25 = 0.10 = 10% of all students. Adding (65%) or subtracting (15%) the percentages are the classic CAT traps.

The price of a litre of petrol rose from ₹80 to ₹100. What is the percent increase?

  1. $20\%$
  2. $25\%$
  3. $80\%$
  4. $125\%$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $25\%$

Percent change = (100 − 80)/80 × 100 = 20/80 × 100 = 25%. Using 100 (the new value) as the base would give 20%, a classic CAT trap.

In a survey of 100 people, 60 drank tea, 50 drank coffee, and 30 drank both. How many drank neither?

  1. $10$
  2. $20$
  3. $30$
  4. $40$
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $20$

Union (tea or coffee) = 60 + 50 − 30 = 80. Neither = total − union = 100 − 80 = 20.
