Worked practice questions

Which of the following is NOT one of the five major actors defined in the NIST cloud computing reference architecture?

  1. Cloud carrier
  2. Cloud auditor
  3. Cloud regulator
  4. Cloud broker
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Cloud regulator

1. Section 2.1 states the list outright: the reference architecture "defines five major actors: cloud consumer, cloud provider, cloud carrier, cloud auditor and cloud broker". 2. Carrier, auditor and broker all appear in that sentence, so each of them is a real actor. 3. Cloud regulator does not appear anywhere in the architecture. It sounds plausible because auditing is discussed at length, but auditing is done by the cloud auditor, who assesses rather than regulates. 4. Note what an actor is defined to be: "an entity (a person or an organization) that participates in a transaction or process and/or performs tasks in cloud computing". Consumer and provider are the other two. _Source: NIST SP 500-292 "NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture" (Sept 2011), section 2.1 "The Conceptual Reference Model"_

Which of the following is NOT one of the five major areas of a cloud provider's activities?

  1. Service deployment
  2. Service orchestration
  3. Service arbitrage
  4. Cloud service management
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: C. Service arbitrage

1. Section 2.3 closes by naming the five areas: "a cloud provider conducts its activities in the areas of service deployment, service orchestration, cloud service management, security, and privacy". 2. Deployment, orchestration and service management are three of those five, so none of them can be the answer. Security and privacy are the remaining two. 3. Service arbitrage is not a provider activity at all. It is one of the three cloud *broker* categories set out in section 2.5. 4. The confusion is easy to fall into because both lists use the word *service*, and because section 3 expands the provider's five areas into subsections that sit right next to the broker discussion. 5. A quick check: the provider's five areas each get their own subsection in section 3, from 3.1 through 3.5. Arbitrage appears in none of them. _Source: NIST SP 500-292 "NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture" (Sept 2011), section 2.3 "Cloud Provider" and section 2.5 "Cloud Broker"_

How many major actors does the NIST cloud reference architecture define?

  1. Five
  2. Nine
  3. Seven
  4. Twelve
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: A. Five

1. The architecture is built around named participants. 2. They are consumer, provider, broker, auditor and carrier. 3. The five major participating actors are named in the architecture. 4. So the answer is five. _Source: NIST SP 500-292, 'NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture'_
