Worked practice questions

**Ethers** have the general formula:

  1. R-OH
  2. R-O-R' (two alkyl/aryl groups bonded via oxygen)
  3. R-CO-R'
  4. R-CHO
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. R-O-R' (two alkyl/aryl groups bonded via oxygen)

**Ethers:** R-O-R' where R, R' are alkyl/aryl groups (same or different). E.g., diethyl ether $(C_2H_5)_2O$, anisole $C_6H_5OCH_3$, THF (cyclic). Generally less reactive than alcohols; used as solvents.

**Williamson's synthesis** of $(\text{CH}_3)_3\text{C-O-CH}_3$ would best use:

  1. $(\text{CH}_3)_3\text{C-Cl}$ + $\text{CH}_3\text{ONa}$
  2. $(\text{CH}_3)_3\text{C-ONa}$ + $\text{CH}_3\text{Cl}$
  3. Two molecules of $(\text{CH}_3)_3\text{C-OH}$
  4. Both A and B equally
Show answer and solution

Correct answer: B. $(\text{CH}_3)_3\text{C-ONa}$ + $\text{CH}_3\text{Cl}$

S$_N$2 needs less-hindered substrate. tert-butyl chloride would undergo elimination, not substitution (3° halide + strong base → alkene). Use bulkier alkoxide (t-BuO⁻) + smaller alkyl halide (CH₃Cl). **Williamson rule:** alkoxide from the bulkier side + alkyl halide from the smaller side.
