Why is a statement of affairs NOT called a balance sheet, even though it lists assets and liabilities?
ABecause it is prepared only at the year end
BBecause it shows capital on the assets side
CBecause its values are not all from ledgers
DBecause it excludes all the fixed assets
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Because its values are not all from ledgers
1. The textbook accepts that the statement resembles a balance sheet in form.
2. It then gives the reason for the different name: the values of the assets and liabilities shown are not fully based on ledger balances.
3. Some items are taken from the accounts that were maintained, some from relevant documents, and some balances are mere estimates based on memory.
4. A balance sheet, by contrast, is prepared exclusively on the basis of ledger balances, which is what makes it reliable.
5. Capital appears on the liabilities side of both statements, and fixed assets do appear in the statement of affairs, so options B and D misstate its content.
