1. A hallucination is a perceptual experience occurring in the absence of external stimulation. 2. Auditory hallucinations, meaning hearing voices, occur in roughly two thirds of patients and are by far the most common form. 3. The voices may be familiar or unfamiliar, may converse or argue, or may keep up a running commentary on behaviour. 4.
