A parallel-plate capacitor has plates of area 1.00 m^2 separated by 0.0010 m, with nothing between the plates. Using C0 = epsilon_0 A / d, where epsilon_0 = 8.85 x 10^-12 F/m, what is its capacitance?
A8.9 x 10^-9 F
B8.9 x 10^-12 F
C8.9 x 10^-6 F
D8.9 x 10^-3 F
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. 8.9 x 10^-9 F
1. C0 = epsilon_0 A / d = (8.85 x 10^-12 F/m)(1.00 m^2) / (0.0010 m).
2. This works out to 8.85 x 10^-9 F, which rounds to 8.9 x 10^-9 F, or 8.9 nF.
3. Even a plate the size of a football field gives a fairly small capacitance without a dielectric, which is why real capacitors use extra tricks to boost C.
