Starting at the lumen and moving outwards, in what order do the four tissue layers of the alimentary canal appear?
AMucosa, submucosa, muscularis, serosa
BSerosa, muscularis, mucosa, submucosa
CSubmucosa, mucosa, serosa, muscularis
DMuscularis, serosa, submucosa, mucosa
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: A. Mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, serosa
1. The wall of the alimentary canal keeps the same four layers along its whole length.
2. The innermost layer, touching the food in the lumen, is the mucosa, and the submucosa lies immediately beneath it.
3. Outside the submucosa comes the muscularis, and the outermost layer inside the abdominal cavity is the serosa.
4. Any order that puts the serosa or the muscularis next to the lumen reverses the wall and is wrong.
