Atrial natriuretic hormone opposes angiotensin II by producing which effect?

ARetention of sodium, raising blood volume
BRelease of more renin from the kidneys
CLoss of sodium and water, lowering volume
DConstriction of arterioles throughout the body
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: C. Loss of sodium and water, lowering volume
1. Cells in the atria secrete atrial natriuretic hormone when blood volume stretches them severely. 2. Ventricular cells make a similar B type natriuretic hormone. 3. Natriuretic hormones are antagonists of angiotensin II, so they drive sodium and water out through the kidneys. 4. They also suppress renin, aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone production. 5. Both blood volume and blood pressure therefore fall, which is the opposite of sodium retention or vasoconstriction. _Source: OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology (CC BY 4.0), Ch 20 "The Cardiovascular System: Blood Vessels and Circulation", section 20.4 Homeostatic Regulation of the Vascular System_
