Read these lines: "I did confess, but I confessed a lie. I confessed, that I might obtain absolution; but now that falsehood lies heavier at my heart than all my other sins. Ever since I was condemned, my confessor has besieged me; he threatened and menaced, until I almost began to think that I was the monster that he said I was." Why did she confess?
ATo protect the person who was guilty
BTo gain absolution under constant pressure
CTo shorten the time she spent in prison
DTo spare her friends the pain of a trial
Answer & Solution
Correct answer: B. To gain absolution under constant pressure
1. 1. She separates the act from the truth at once: she confessed, but what she confessed was a lie.
2. 2. Her stated motive follows the word that: she confessed so that she might obtain absolution.
3. 3. The pressure behind that motive is then described, a confessor who besieged, threatened and menaced her.
4. 4. Together those give the first option.
5. 5. She never names another culprit, so option B invents a motive.
6. 6. The confession came after she was condemned, so it could not shorten anything, ruling out option C.
