New army recruits have their hair cut short, hand over their clothes and put on matching uniforms. What is this step called?

1. The military is a total institution, cut off from the wider society. 2. Resocialization there runs in two parts. 3. First the newcomer must leave the old identity behind. 4. That step is the degradation ceremony, where old identity markers go and new ones are issued. 5. Short hair and matching uniforms strip away exactly those markers. 6. Only afterwards is the new identity built, through basic training and shared routine. 7.
